Pan Karol

Pan Karol was born in 1919. For eighty-eight years he had been living in one and the same house on the main square of the historic gothic craft center Spišská Sobota. Here he grew up, here he became a farmer. He was educated as a bricklayer. His father had a farm with a hundred pigs at the backyard of the family house right on he historic market square.

Across the street just a few meters from Pan Karol’s house the Renaissance bell tower, St. George church with the altar from Paul of Levocha’s workshop and the house of sculptor Jan Brokoff. As an eleven year old boy Karol took the horses and the cart full of pigs, a four hours ride to sell them at the market close to the Polish border.

For three years now he has been living at the old people’s residence in Poprad. He is very bright and funny. He shared his life stories with us in Slovakian and German. His laugh and energy gave a lot of pleasure during our talk. (bas)
